Q+A with Gabriel Villaran

We are honored to welcome Gabriel as one of the newest members of the Vissla family as a global big wave legend and ambassador for the brand in Peru. We got a chance to catch up with him during a recent trip to Costa Rica for our 3rd annual Cosmic Hermosa event, where he was riding some slightly different craft than he usually brings on a trip.

So what brings you to Costa Rica?
The Cosmic Hermosa, the warm weather (winter at home) and the fun waves...

How is it surfing in the Cosmic Hermosa?
It was really fun and difficult at the same time. Such a cool and different concept riding those vintage boards in a heat, you really have to adapt. The waves where solid and kinda fast, but I managed to find some tubes and do a couple carves. I really enjoyed it all the way.

How do you feel about the Cosmic concept? Could it work in Peru?
Its a really interesting and fun concept in my opinion, surfing with retro boards is not easy at all, but I find it really cool to be able to adjust and start approaching waves differently... I think it will be a great event in Peru, we have a long surf history in Peru and people still enjoy those vintage shapes...so it can be a good show!

You've had a long career in various aspects of surfing, starting on the QS and now more focused on charging and doing the Big Wave World Tour. How was that transition?
The bottom line is that I like being a competitor...so all kinds of competitions are good to me...small waves on the QS can be really hard and frustrating, but it is always fun traveling with the boys, getting to see new places, different cultures, etc..plus there is a really high level of surfing in those events, so you can either take advantage of it while you can, or you can really get pissed off.. now I'm focused on bigger wave events, where I only need to make the drop and pull in haha...it's something that I really feel I'm meant for.

You're just coming back from a really heavy injury. What happened?
Yeah, I was at the wrong place when I was ready to pull into a 6 footer at Pipe...I saw the shoulder of the wave looked weird so I thought it would close out...I made a bad decision and in less than a second I was in the worst spot...so I broke my Tibia in half. It was a complicated and difficult experience. But I was able to paddle out of the impact zone and then some friends helped me get to shore and the rest was normal accident procedure.

How's the rehab process going?
After 6 months of rehab I'm starting to feel normal again, still a bit of pain but I'm stoked to be out surfing again!

How is it having time away from the Big Wave tour? Is it more of a relief to have some time off, or you can't wait to get back?
Yeah I'm honestly kinda stoked to have some time away from the Big Wave tour...it gets a bit stressful to be ready anytime anywhere. Being able to just think about surfing for fun and getting back to my rhythm is pretty peacefull haha.

Favorite big wave spot on the planet?
Pico Alto. Nothing like a long 20ft frontside wave in front of your house.

Scariest wave on the planet?
Big Nazare.

Favorite wave in Peru?
Cabo Blanco.

What is it that still motivates you the most in surfing?
Empty barrels !

You do a lot of community and environmental work in Peru, can you tell us about that?
Yeah, I've been doing some work with Waves for Water, since we had a really bad year with too much rain and floods, a bunch of towns and cities collapsed, and providing them with the water filters really helped a lot. It was great to be able to help people in need.

Any last words?
Stoked to be part of the Vissla family! And to be back in the water doing what I love :)

Estamos orgullosos de darle la bienvenida a Gabriel, siendo uno de nuestros nuevos integrantes de la familia Vissla, leyenda de olas grandes y embajador de la marca en Perú. Tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con el durante su último viaje a Costa Rica, en el cual participó de la 3ra edición del Cosmic Hermosa, donde lo vimos usar tablas diferentes a las que usualmente lo vemos surfear en sus viajes.

Qué te trae por Costa Rica?
El evento Cosmic Hermosa, el clima caliente (invierno en casa) y las buenas olas.

Cómo fue tu surfing en el Cosmic Hermosa?
Fue difícil y divertido al mismo tiempo. Super interesante el concepto de surfear con tablas retro en un campeonato, realmente tienes que adaptarte. Las olas estuvieron sólidas y rápidas, pero pude encontrar algunos tubos y hacer un par de buenos turns. Vacilé un montón en esta nueva experiencia.

Qué opinas del concepto Cosmic? Puede funcionar en Perú?
Es interesante y bien divertido en mi opinión, surfear con tablas antiguas no es fácil, pero me parece chévere adaptarte y enfocarte de manera diferente para surfear bien. Creo que puede ser un gran evento en Perú, tenemos una larga historia de surf y la gente disfruta usar este tipo de shapes y tablas. Será un espectáculo!

Tienes una Carrera larga en varios aspectos del surf, empezando con los QS y ahora más enfocado chargeando olas grandes y siendo parte del Big Wave Tour. Cómo fue esa transición?
En resumen a mi me gusta competir en todo tipo de campeonatos. Olas pequeñas en el QS puede ser bien difícil, pero siempre es divertido viajar con los amigos, conocer nuevos lugares, diferentes culturas, etc y sobre todo existe un nivel de surf muy alto en esos eventos, entonces puedes aprovechar todo eso o puedes terminar enojado y frustrado. Ahora estoy más enfocado en surfear olas grandes donde sólo tengo que dropear y meterme al tubo, siento que realmente es lo mío.

Estás regresando de una lesión bien fuerte. Qué pasó?
Sí, estuve en el lugar no indicado cuando traté de entrar al tubo en Pipeline. Ví cómo el codo de la ola estaba malo y pensé que se iba a cerrar, tomé una mala decisión y en menos de 1 segundo estuve en el peor lugar. Me rompí la tibia en 2 partes. Fue una experiencia complicada y difícil. Pude salir de la zona de impacto, después unos amigos me ayudaron a salir a playa y el resto fue el procedimiento normal de un accidente.

Cómo es el proceso de rehabilitación?
Después de 6 meses de rehab estoy empezando a sentirme normal, todavía tengo un poco de dolor pero estoy felíz de estar de vuelta surfeando!

Que tal es tener un tiempo libre del Big Wave Tour? Lo estás disfrutando o ya quieres regresar al Tour?
Honestamente estoy contento de estar unos meses en descanso del Big Wave Tour.. Se pone un poco estresante estar siempre listo para las competencias de ola grande. Surfear por diversión y regresar a mi ritmo es tranquilidad jaja.

Tu ola grande favorite en el planeta?
Pico Alto. Nada como una derecha larga de 20-25 pies frente a mi casa.

La ola mas tenebrosa del planeta?
Nazaré – Portugal.

Ola favorite en Peru?
Cabo Blanco.

Qué es lo que te sigue motivando en el surfing?
Los tubos sin gente.

Estas involucrado en trabajos sociales en Perú ayudando a las comunidades locales, nos puedes contar un poco al respecto?
Sí, he estado trabajando con Waves For Water desde que empezó el año debido a las fuertes lluvias y huaycos, muchas ciudades y pueblos colapsaron, y brindarles filtros de agua ha sido de mucha ayuda. Es buenísimo poder colaborar con la gente que lo necesita.
